Kildangan V Ellistown U12 Semi May '14Kildangan Under 12s produced a battling display to overcome Ellistown in the Under 12 semi-final in Kildangan Tuesday evening 20th. The final score was 4:08 to 1:06 in favour of Kildangan.

Kildangan now go on to play Nurney in the Division 4 Final on Saturday 24th in Hawkfield, provisionally 2pm.

Kildangan opened the scoring with a beauty of a point from Daniel Gilbert, added to moments later by an unstoppable goal from Josh Burns. However Kildangan weren’t to have it all their own way and Ellistown replied with a goal from full forward Jack Donnelly followed by a point from Tom Waters.

Both teams were going at it hammer and tongs, however a key difference at this stage was the free taking of Kildangan midfielder Daniel Gilbert. Daniel struck three superb ‘45s from the ground, splitting the posts each time.  Cian Murtagh also added a  point during the opening period.

Ellistown looked dangerous on the break, Tom Waters popping up to score another super point, Paul Bracken and Tadgh Watson adding two more to leave it 1:04 to 1:06 at half-time in favour of Kildangan.

On the resumption Ellistown closed the gap to a single point thanks to Tadgh Watson. Ellistown looked to be in the ascendancy at this stage, forcing the Kildangan backs into frenzied defending; none more so than Kildangan full back Ben Keogh who snuffed out a number of Ellistown attacks. Kildangan centre back John Kelly also made a number of crucial interceptions to keep Ellistown at bay.

Then disaster struck for Ellistown as one such attack broke down, two passes and Kildangan corner forward Mark O’Donovan had the ball in the back of the Ellistown net. Minutes later, the aforementioned Mark again took on the Ellistown defence and once more buried the ball in their net. The score now stood at 3:06 to 1:05 in favour of Kildangan with ten minutes remaining. A seven point gap left a lot of ground for Ellistown to make up.
Kildangan V Ellistown U12 Semi May '14Ellistown kept trying, however the Kildangan back line did not budge. Ellistown’s Tadgh Watson added a solitary point from a free with minutes remaining.

Kildangan struck back with a goal from Cormac Finnegan with points from Daniel Gilbert and Oisin Irvine to close out the game, although not as comfortably as the scoreline suggests.

Well done to both teams on a game played in a very sporting manner, the key difference were the Mark O’Donovan goals which killed off the Ellistown challenge and the Daniel Gilbert frees. Rather than pick individual players, credit goes to both teams for the skills and commitment on display and the pride  with which they represented their clubs.
